About the COMPASS Self-paced Course
10-Session Curriculum Overview & Learning Goals Session 1: COMPASS Introduction Understand the purpose and structure of the COMPASS program Learn how to navigate the self-paced course platform Identify personal goals for participating in the series Session 2: COMPASS Special Education, IDEA and 504 Understand what special education is and who qualifies Learn the roles of families, schools, and students Recognize how special education supports student success Understand the differences between IDEA and Section 504 Learn eligibility criteria and protections under each law Identify when IDEA or 504 may be appropriate for a student Session 3: Procedural Safeguards in Illinois Special Education Understand family and student rights under Illinois special education law Learn about notice, consent, dispute resolution, and due process options Identify steps families can take when disagreements arise Session 4: Understanding Your Child’s IEP Document Learn the purpose and required components of the IEP Understand how goals, services, and accommodations are developed Identify ways families and students can provide meaningful input Session 5: Early Intervention and Early Childhood Special Education in Illinois Understand Early Intervention (Part C) and Early Childhood Special Education (Part B) Learn eligibility timelines and transition from EI to preschool services Identify family rights and roles during early childhood planning Session 6: Secondary Transition Planning for Students with Disabilities Understand transition requirements beginning at age 14.5 in Illinois Explore post-secondary options including employment, education, and independent living Learn how transition goals connect to adult services and community life Session 7: Mental and Behavioral Supports for Students with Disabilities Understand school-based mental and behavioral health supports Learn about Functional Behavioral Assessments and Behavior Intervention Plans Identify family and student roles in supporting positive behavior Session 8: School Discipline and Students with Disabilities Understand discipline protections under IDEA and Section 504 Learn about Manifestation Determination Reviews Identify steps families can take when discipline issues arise Session 9: Self-Advocacy – Empowering Students with Disabilities Understand the importance of self-advocacy and student voice Learn strategies to support students in participating in IEPs and school decisions Build skills for self-determination across school and life settings Session 10: COMPASS Completion Program Outcomes Participants who complete the COMPASS series will: Demonstrate increased knowledge of special education systems and rights Feel more confident advocating for themselves or their child Be better prepared to partner with schools and plan for the future
Meet Your COMPASS Instructors
The COMPASS Program is facilitated by experienced Educational Support Coaches at Family Matters PTIC, the federally funded Parent Training and Information Center in Illinois. Our Educational Support Coaches are professionals and parents of young adults with disabilities, and they have navigated the Special Education for their own families. They weave together both professional and personal experience to help course participants build a robust, practical, and hands-on understanding of the Special Education system in Illinois.
